The Use Of The Straight Blast in Competition and Street Fights

"When in doubt, straight blast." - Sifu Lamar Davis II. The straight blast is one of the most effective tools in martial arts. Whether in Ultimate Fighting Championship, boxing, or on the streets, it is an important and crucial tool in finishing the fight quickly and effectively. The straight blast can basically be defined as a rapid series of vertical punches using both arms. It can be compared to a flurry of jabs in boxing. It is most effective when used to back up your opponent and prevent them from attacking. The straight blast can be applied to anything from mixed martial arts competitions such as Ultimate Fighting Championship, boxing or kickboxing, or in a street fight.

In cage fighting tournaments such as Ultimate Fighting Championship, it gives you great advantage to trap your opponent in the corner of the cage. In the corner they are stuck up against metal, enabling you to do such things as hit his head on the cage. If you are on you and your opponent are on your feet and your opponent is on the offensive, it is useful to straight blast at him to throw off his offence. This is especially effective because the less times you get hit, the better your chance of winning. In these mixed martial arts tournaments, the gloves are very thin and knockouts can happen in one punch. You don’t want to be knocked out or backed in to the corner, so do it to your opponent.

Not many people utilize the straight blast in orthodox boxing. It is not a very well known tool in the boxing world. However, I have seen it utilized to its full extent when backing someone up in to the ropes to set up for a knockout punch. The straight blast can be compared to the basic jab of boxing; except your fist is kept vertical with your thumb facing upwards. Keeping your fist vertical allows you to throw them a lot faster in combos because you don’t have to take the time to twist your fist. It can be utilized as an alternative, more effective way of throwing a jab in boxing. In kickboxing, the same straight blast combo can be used the same way, even more effectively. While the opponent is trying to protect his face from the flurry of punches coming at him, you can kick simultaneously to the chest, groin or legs. This is very effective to confuse your opponent.

The straight blast is an effective way to use offence as defence. It is next to impossible for your opponent to attack while trying to cover their face from the repeated punches being thrown his way and keep his balance while backing up. This gives you, the attacker many opportunities. A swift kick to the groin can end the fight in an instant. It may be cheap, but in a street fight you should do what you need to do in order to win as fast as possible. Especially if your opponent is bigger than you and seems like he poses a threat, this is an effective way to catch him off guard and gain the advantage on him. The straight blast is one of the most effective tools in a street fight. Any kind of skilled martial artist, whether it be a karate expert, boxer, or grappler, can’t do anything except run backwards when someone is throwing that many punches at their face.

Bruce Lee was probably the fastest puncher to ever live. He could throw ten punches a second. This means in a 10 second flurry of straight blasts he would throw a hundred punches at you. People who witnessed Bruce Lee straight blasting said they only saw one out of ten of his punches. This is an unstoppable onslaught. This comes from years of mastering the straight blast, but anybody can do it, it is a simple and effective concept. It is sudden, coming out of nowhere. It will surprise any experienced fighter. Whether it be in the cage, in the ring, or on the street, the straight blast has been proven as one of the most effective martial arts techniques ever.
