Reasons to Continue on to Post-Secondary Education

Why is it so important for people to continue on to post-secondary education?  There are many reasons to continue on after high school; some reasons are that post-secondary education will allow you to get the skills and tools that you will need to help you prepare for a good career.  Another reason is that post-secondary education can also help in giving you a better quality of life; by giving you some important values and life experiences that you can pass off to your children.  These are just a few reasons that people looking to continue on to post-secondary education consider to help make their decision.

Will post-secondary education really help you get the career you want?  It has been said that the more education you have the more careers will be open for you to choose from.  Employers today will tend to be more open to a person with the more education, because after attending a post-secondary institution, whether it is a college or university, you will gain the skills and education that you will need for the career you chose.  Having the education and skills you need, you will be more knowledgeable as well as confident when it comes to the career that you choose.  One advantage of post-secondary education is that it will help to increase your earning power; on average a person will earn hundreds of thousands of dollars more over a life time then people who have not continued on to post-secondary education.  There are many careers to choose from and to get educated in.  Whatever you would like to do in life is offered in post-secondary education.  This education will allow you to gain knowledge that will help you deal with life experiences as well as with the obstacles life brings your way.  By choosing to continue on to post-secondary education you will be allowing yourself to achieve a better quality of life.  It will put you in social environments and that will give you the opportunity to meet new and interesting people and allow you to go through experiences that will help you gain the independence that you will need to handle tough situations.

Is there anyone who would not prefer to live a longer, happier, healthier life?  Studies show that compared to high school graduates, college graduates have longer lives, greater stability and security, and more prestigious employment and greater job satisfaction and they are less dependent on government assistance.  Students gain more self-confidence and greater community service leadership skills, and world knowledge from attending a post-secondary educational institute.[1]  Some types of post-secondary education degrees whether from a university, technical, community, or four-year college program, can help to open doors and choices for you in your future that may not be open to someone without an education or training after high school.  Although going on to post-secondary education takes a lot of planning and preparation, it will be worth it.  Earning a post-secondary degree may be the stepping-stone that will allow you to achieve a life-long goal.

Another way that post-secondary education will benefit a person’s life, is it will give you certain values and life experiences that you can pass on to your children.  Your education will help to build a foundation for not only your children, but for our nation’s children, and children of the world.  It has been said that children whose parents attended a post-secondary institution will be more likely to attend one themselves.  Also, research has shown that a child of a university or college educated parent will perform better academically then a child whose parent did not attend any sort of institution.[2]  Post-secondary education also helps to build meaningful foundations of skills and values for your children to use in their lives.

Post-secondary education also allows you to experiencing new and interesting social situations that will help you in life.  The way that these social situations will help you is by helping you to understand the world around you.  It will also help you to become more independent and to become more able to rely on yourself.  In turn, you will gain more self-confidence.

These are just some reasons why continuing education is important.  So, whatever you decide just remember that knowledge is power in today’s society, and the more education you have, the more you will be better prepared for anything that comes your way in life.  Therefore, you will be happier and healthier in the life you live.
