Born James Eugene Carrey, January 17, 1962 in Newmarket, Ontario; son of Percy and Kathleen Carrey; youngest of four children; has two brothers and one sister; married Melissa Womer (an actress), 1987 (divorced, 1994); children: one daughter, Jane; married Lauren Holly (an actress), 1996 (separated, 1997).

Career

Landed his first comedy gig at 15 as a ventriloquist; played comedy clubs in Toronto, 1977-81; starred in Rubberface, a Canadian TV movie feature, 1981; moved to Hollywood, 1981; played clubs and landed roles in such films as Peggy Sue Got Married, 1986, The Dead Pool, 1987, and Earth Girls Are Easy, 1989; television breakthrough with Fox TV's In Living Color, 1990; dramatic role in American TV movie, Doing Time on Maple Drive, 1992; big screen breakthrough with Ace Ventura, Pet Detective, 1993; followed this hit with The Mask, 1994; played The Riddler in Batman Forever, 1995; starred in Cable Guy, 1996; starred in Liar, Liar, 1997. Other film appearances include Club Med, 1983; Finders Keepers, 1984; Once Bitten, 1985; Pink Cadillac, 1989; High Strung, 1991; Dumb and Dumber, 1994; Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls, 1995. Other television appearances include The Duck Factory, 1984; Murder Take All, 1989.
