French Conditional

The present conditional tense describes an action which is possible but not a fact: je
donnerais de l'argent si j'en avais (I would give some money if I had any). It is formed
by adding personal endings to the future stem of the verb: je -ais, tu -ais, il -ait, nous -ions, vous -iez, ils -aient.

partir (to leave)

je partirais
tu partirais
il, elle, on partirait
nous partirions
vous partiriez
ils, elles partiraient
Verbs with infinitives ending in -RE lose the -e before adding the conditional endings:
prendre (to take), je prendrais (I would take).

Uses of the Conditional:

1. To express the idea of would

2. After certain conjunctions

use conditional after: quand, lorsque, dès que, aussitôt que and tant que if the main verb is in the conditional: Il mangerait quand il arriverait.

3. To soften a request, command or desire

4. To express express possibility or unsure action

5. In reported speech
