Do You Believe in Angels?
Why, or Why Not?
One of the great unsolved mysteries in life
is whether or not angels truly exist. Is there a heavenly body
that protects and guides us safely through our daily lives? What
do they look like? Where do they come from? At some point in our
lives we all ask ourselves this one same question - do I believe
in angels?
Since as early as we can remember
there have been many stories, texts, myths and images of these
divine forces that are said to surround and protect us as we
live out our lives. These supernatural beings come in many forms
and by several names. They are commonly known as angels, but
have also been called fairies, imps, pixies and many more. They
are said to be invisible to the human eye and walk through our
lives unnoticed, unless they wish to be so. There has never been
any concrete proof to validate their existence, but many of us
still choose to believe in them. This is probably due to the
fact that as humans, we spend most of our lives living in hope.
It’s a way of making sense of our lives, believing that our
destiny is being forged by a force not within our own control.
Angels. What do they look like? The
word conjures up many different images, including semi naked
beings dressed only in white shawls, brandishing a bow and
arrow, or a beautiful enchanting lady with long blonde hair
shrouded in light, floating effortlessly with a fixed yet warm
stare. What ever image we associate with an angel, they all have
the same unique characteristics - they usually look human in
appearance and they all have dove-like wings.
The angel has been portrayed in
countless films, stories, pictures and books including the most
famous of all, the Bible. In most of these cases the angel is
defined as a messenger and disciple of God. Angels are said to
live in a timeless void between what we call the living and the
dead. Never aging, and existing only for one purpose, they live
there lives as an eternal guide for those mortals in need of
help, and those seeking the after life upon their deaths, which
we commonly call Heaven. The angel is known in nearly every
culture, race and land, in various guises, and is a mythical
creature that stands primarily for good, often being used as a
symbol for peace and godliness.
Whether they truly exist or not, is a
question that we will probably never have answered, and to some
extent this is a good thing, as there is nothing more powerful
than man’s belief and hope. I personally choose to believe in
angels when it suits me best. In times of hardship I may wish
for that divine intervention, and this would probably take the
form of good fortune or luck. However most of the time, I prefer
to believe that I am in control of my own destiny, and that
there is no prewritten path for me to walk. One thing is for
sure, as we live out our lives through times of happiness and
sorrow, we will continue to ask ourselves this same question -
do I believe in angels?
